The Alan Tyler Mathematics Fund
The Alan Tayler Mathematics Fund was established to memorialise Dr. Alan Breach Tayler CBE, Tutorial Fellow in Mathematics at St. Catherine's College from 1962 to 1995. Alan Tayler was one of St. Catherine's College's shining stars. He had an international reputation for creativity and innovation in mathematics, was a dedicated and highly effective teacher and mentor, was incredibly modest, and, particularly in his last years, was an inspiring model of courage and fortitude.
In 1967, Alan Tayler helped found "Study Groups with Industry," where academic and industrial researchers interacted in week-long workshops. In 1982, he was awarded the gold medal of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. In 1993, he was made a Commander of the British Empire.
Although he was deeply dedicated to mathematics and teaching, he also had a passion for rugby. He once said that he wanted to play rugger so he decided to study mathematics to get to Oxford. Contributions to the Alan Tayler Mathematics Fund are used to establish an endowed fellowship in Alan Tayler's name and to support the instruction of mathematics at St. Catherine's College.
